Paul Herr— Pastor of Adult Ministries

Top things people say to describe him… Short, bald, funny – well, that could describe any Paul on staff.  Let’s get more specific: passionate, hard-working, a planner - but knows from experience that God’s plans trump all of his.

What his family would add about him… His ability to make up songs to fit every occasion – from frying eggs to slipping on a jacket – is second to none. His kids would say he’s the best coach for basketball, football, baseball, soccer, lacrosse, judo – okay, maybe not those last two. His wife envies his ability sleep through the simultaneous sounds of screaming children, a buzzing oven timer, and the roar of the washing machine.

What does he do, anyway? He reads. A lot. Since a big part of his job is coaching and mentoring leaders for the many adult ministries - Community Life Groups, Grounded, Starting Point, Financial Peace University, First Impressions Ministry – to name a few, he makes sure he’s always learning, so he can pass that knowledge on to others. He juggles a lot and wears plenty of hats, so you might say he’d make a good clown.

What he's passionate about… Small groups!  Paul has a heart for people growing deeper in their faith and training them to serve God with their giftedness. And he believes the best environment and biblical example is groups where community is developed and life is lived together. Also, helping people manage their money according to Biblical truth.

His life verses and favorite books… Colossians 3:17; Romans 12:1-2; Acts 2:42-47; Ephesians 2:8-10; 4:11-12; Deep & Wide, Toxic Charity, Barefoot Church.

Quickest way to his schedule… “I’ve got New York Yankees tickets and 1 has your name on it.” That’ll work, Jack!

Family Life… Paul and his wife Maxine have been married for 19 years. Their three children, Rachel (10), Caleb (8), and Noah (5) keep their pantry, gas tanks and wallets empty while keeping the laundry basket, vacuum bag and their parents’ hearts full.

Life before Century Baptist Church… Before Paul came to Century he served in a few pastoral roles in Arizona and Washington State. As a North Dakota native, it was good to come home.

Where you're likely to find him when not at the church… at the YMCA, at the grocery store (he’s addicted to a good deal), or asleep on the couch.

Things you might not know… Paul would like to write a book someday; knew he would marry Maxine the first day he saw her; sang in a quartet with 2 of his brothers and his cousin; aspires to host SportsCenter; dreams of being the chaplain for the N.Y. Yankees and Oakland Raiders; he was awarded “Best Legs” in college (he still has the trophy to prove it); and he always carries an index card on Sundays.
